What to do when your ChatGPT export does not arrive
Use a calm troubleshooting sequence for missing messages, expired download links and incomplete downloads.

These archive guides cover independent backups. Persir accepts prompt summaries, not full account exports. Use the summary flow.
A missing export can be frustrating when you are preparing to leave an account or recover a project. The safest response is to determine where the process stopped: request, delivery, authentication, download or archive inspection. Repeating every step without that distinction can leave you with several messages and no reliable source copy.
Confirm the request and the account
Start with a private note of the account and approximate request time. Check whether you requested data from a personal account or an organization-managed workspace. Those can have different export controls. Avoid switching between accounts while troubleshooting, because a download message for one account may not work in another session.
OpenAI’s current guide says exports may take up to seven days. It advises waiting for an existing request to finish, checking delivery folders and contacting support if it has not arrived after that period. Follow the linked guide for the current availability and support route. A delay by itself does not show that your data has been lost.
Check the delivery path
Look in the mailbox associated with the requesting account, including spam and filtered folders. If your account uses phone-only access, check the relevant messages. Search for the provider rather than assuming that the export will arrive alongside ordinary conversation notifications.
Do not forward the message to a public forum to ask for help. A screenshot can expose your account address or a usable download link. When contacting official support, describe the request time and failure stage without attaching your complete conversations. Never send a password, authentication cookie or recovery code.
Distinguish an expired link from a bad archive
The official guide says the download link expires after twenty-four hours and requires the requesting account. If the link has expired, request a new export through official controls. Do not use a third-party link-repair service. An old message remains an old message even if a browser repeatedly reloads it.
A successful download followed by an archive-opening failure is a different problem. Check the local filename and whether the browser reports completion. Keep the original file while investigating. A network interruption, disk-space problem or incomplete temporary file can look like a provider format change.
Preserve your account while recovering the copy
If the export matters, postpone account deletion or workspace changes until you have downloaded and checked it. Write a list of the projects you need to preserve and verify representative records. A message saying that a request was received is not evidence that those projects are already backed up.
For urgent work, copy a small amount of permitted material manually into a private note while you wait. Label it as a partial working copy. This can help you continue a project without pretending that the note is a complete archive or transferring employer material without permission.
Resume with a verified snapshot
Once a new file arrives, record its download date and inspect a few known conversations. Remove failed temporary downloads if they no longer serve a purpose. Keep only the copies your backup plan needs and check whether their folder is synchronized elsewhere.
You do not need to wait for a ChatGPT export to register with Persir. Copy the Persir prompt, open ChatGPT and return the available-context summary as text or a small response file. Add to my profile performs the save and continues registration to optional questions. Persir cannot speed up a separate backup request or recover conversations the provider no longer has.
