A backup checklist before deleting AI conversations
Verify a usable copy, identify what deletion affects and avoid assuming that deleting one account removes every copy.

These archive guides cover independent backups. Persir accepts prompt summaries, not full account exports. Use the summary flow.
Before deleting conversations, decide what you want to retain and where the remaining copy should live. Deletion and backup solve different problems. A backup preserves information you may need, while deletion reduces information held in a particular place. Doing both carefully requires an inventory rather than a single button.
Define the scope of the deletion
Write down whether you intend to delete one conversation, a whole history, an imported source in another service or the provider account itself. Include related working copies, shared documents and downloaded files. These are separate locations with separate controls.
Also decide why you are deleting. If your goal is tidying an interface, a broad account deletion may be unnecessary. If your goal is removing sensitive material, keeping a full unprotected archive in Downloads defeats part of that purpose. Match the retained copy to the information you actually need, and avoid creating more copies than the task requires.
Request the source copy first
Use the provider’s official export process while you still have account access and can receive verification messages. Check the linked provider instructions for current availability. Organization-managed accounts may require administrator involvement and may limit what you are permitted to take.
Do not treat a pending request or an email notification as your backup. Download the archive and verify it locally before removing the source. If it is essential for work, preserve the account until you have checked the relevant project material. Avoid importing the archive into another service solely to prove it exists.
Test the backup you will rely on
Open a working copy and find several known conversations from different dates. Check the content you care about, not only the archive filename. A valid ZIP can still contain a narrower snapshot than you expected. Record any missing periods or inaccessible attachments without inventing a recovery guarantee.
If you created a derivative note, make sure it includes the decisions, references and unresolved questions necessary to continue your project. A polished summary that omits the original source may be a poor backup for research. Conversely, a complete archive may be excessive when you only need a permitted personal reading list.
Secure the remaining records
Choose a private storage location with access controls appropriate to the content. Review device users, cloud synchronization and shared folders. If you keep an encrypted copy, ensure that you can recover its key through a method that does not depend on the account you are deleting.
Maintain a small inventory of copies rather than writing the sensitive material into the inventory itself. Include source, snapshot date, location and intended retention reason. Remove duplicate downloads, temporary extraction folders and abandoned conversion files when they are no longer necessary. Be aware that device or cloud backups may retain older copies under their own settings.
Verify each deletion independently
After using a deletion control, check the relevant service’s visible state. Do not assume that deleting the source account erases an export already imported elsewhere. Likewise, removing a Persir import does not delete the original conversations in ChatGPT or Claude or the ZIP on your device.
Persir supports individual saved-detail deletion and account deletion for live app records, with provider backup and log limitations described in Privacy. Keep the distinction clear in your checklist: source provider, local archive, imported records and previously shared material. The useful outcome is a deliberate map of what remains, not an unsupported promise that every trace has disappeared.
