How to export your ChatGPT data safely
Request a ChatGPT export, verify the download and keep a useful private copy before uploading anything elsewhere.

These archive guides cover independent backups. Persir accepts prompt summaries, not full account exports. Use the summary flow.
A ChatGPT export gives you a snapshot you can inspect independently of the conversation interface. That is useful when you want to preserve a project, review old questions or decide what information belongs in a personal profile. Treat the archive as a private record. A download can contain much more than the few conversations you remember writing recently.
Request through the official account controls
OpenAI’s instructions say to sign in, open your profile menu, choose Settings, then Data controls, Export data and Confirm export. The Privacy Portal offers another request route. Self-service availability depends on the account or workspace; managed organizations have different controls. Check the official guide linked below rather than assuming your employer’s account works like a personal account.
Before starting, confirm which account is open and whether you can receive its verification messages. If you use several accounts, record a neutral label such as “personal account, October snapshot” in a private note. Keep your account email out of public filenames. Do not give an export helper your password or a session token.
Download and check the archive
OpenAI says delivery can take up to seven days and the download link expires after twenty-four hours. Download while signed in to the requesting account. Save the file to a folder you control, away from shared work drives. Keep the message and link private while they remain usable.
An export request is not finished when an email arrives. Check that the downloaded file exists, opens locally and contains the period or project you wanted. A browser may leave an incomplete temporary download after an interrupted connection. If the file is unusually small or will not open, preserve the original and investigate before treating it as a complete backup.
Review what you are actually keeping
Make a working copy and leave the original untouched. Browse a few conversations from different dates. Look for other people’s names, pasted documents, credentials, employer information and sensitive personal discussions. Your ability to download a record does not establish permission to distribute everything inside it.
Write a short inventory alongside the archive: when you requested it, when you downloaded it, which account it represents and any obvious gaps. Avoid recording private conversation excerpts in the inventory. This small note makes a later comparison much easier when several exports have similar filenames.
Choose a use before choosing an upload
A good first project is narrow: retrieve a reading list, review an abandoned goal or summarize your own stated shopping constraints. You may be able to do that locally without transferring the complete archive. If another service asks for data, inspect its supported format, processing purposes, deletion controls and providers first.
Persir now accepts a small response created with its versioned ChatGPT prompt instead of a full account export. Copy the prompt, use the personal context actually available in ChatGPT, and bring the summary back as pasted text or a response file. Full ZIPs and conversation exports are rejected. Confirming the summary saves it for your private profile; company sharing remains a separate decision.
A practical completion checklist
Keep the original, verify representative conversations, document the snapshot date and decide whether a second copy is necessary. Remove unwanted temporary copies from Downloads and review whether your backup folder syncs to a shared cloud account. Remember that copies outside Persir remain your responsibility.
When you are ready to explore a profile, begin with information you are comfortable reviewing and correcting. An export can help you recover context, but you remain the person who decides what that context means.
